Thomas Macagnano, McNair Academic High School principal and Chris Gadsden, Lincoln High School principal had been invited to attend a panel discussion and townhall meeting with school leaders at the White House on Thursday, January 25th. The meeting was hosted by the new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and the Department of Education, in conjunction with NASSP to advance solutions that will better protect educators and students from the far too frequent violence that has increasingly affected many schools across the country.
The panel at the event featured Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, a member of the NASSP Principal Recovery Network, and additional government and school safety officials.
Panelists discussed strategies to prevent school violence, support available for schools that have suffered shootings, and the role that school principals can play in school safety, including advising parents and the community on the importance of safe storage of firearms.
